Password protect PDF — AES-256, locally

Protect a PDF with a password directly in your browser. Download an encrypted copy without uploading the document or password.

Protect your PDF

Use at least 12 characters. The password protects the whole PDF with AES-256. Keep it somewhere safe; forgotten passwords cannot be recovered here.

The original must not already be encrypted. Existing digital signatures can become invalid when rewriting the PDF. Metadata and visible content remain in the protected copy.

Protect the whole document

Choose an unencrypted PDF, enter and repeat a new password, then download an AES-256-encrypted copy. A PDF viewer asks for the password when opening it. Page content and document metadata remain in the protected copy.

Use a long, unique password and store it safely. PDF passwords are not a substitute for removing confidential information. Existing certificate-based digital signatures may become invalid after rewriting. The original file stays unchanged. This tool does not accept already encrypted PDFs.

Check the protected copy

Open the downloaded PDF in a separate viewer and check that it asks for the new password. Compare all pages before sharing. Maximum input size: 30 MB. Processing happens locally, and the password is not saved to a server.
