Resize images for Instagram — feed photo dimensions

Prepare a feed photo with a 1080-pixel width, preserve its proportions and check the result before posting.

Requirements and examples

Instagram’s current photo-resolution guidance recommends a width of at least 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4. The presets below cover square, 4:5 and 3:4 feed photos; they are not video or Story specifications.

Choose the frame before reducing file size

Fit keeps the whole image with white margins; centered crop removes edges to fill the frame. Check that faces, text and products remain visible. Instagram’s preview can differ from the downloaded image, so inspect the post before publishing.

A 1080-pixel width does not guarantee a particular file size or a ranking benefit. The quality slider is an encoder setting. Keep the original and compare fine details in the actual JPG download.

Prepare your image locally

Choose a preset or your own dimensions. The output is JPG; white fills transparent areas and any margins. No file is uploaded.

The image is never stretched. Without enlargement, a small source may leave margins even with centered crop. For manual positioning, use the crop tool first.

This checks the finished file; it does not automatically compress to the limit. 1 KB = 1000 bytes.
