Compress PDF without quality loss: options and limits

Last reviewed: 9 October 2026.

What does “without quality loss” mean?

Lossless optimization does not intentionally alter visible pages. It can store internal data more efficiently and reduce unused objects. Savings are limited: an optimized document may remain nearly the same size. A fixed target and guaranteed unchanged appearance are different goals and cannot be promised for every file.

Which mode should I use?

Start with smart mode and compare the result with the original. A strict target can require stronger processing. Pages may be rendered again and saved as images. This affects selectable text, links, form fields and existing digital signatures as well as image quality.

How should I inspect the result?

Open the saved copy in a PDF viewer and zoom into small text. Check table lines, dates, barcodes, stamps and signatures. Test search, required form fields and links. File size alone does not establish that the document remains suitable for your purpose. Also check signature status for digitally signed documents.

What is better than stronger compression?

Remove unnecessary pages if permitted or split the document. Create new scans at a suitable resolution instead of repeatedly recompressing existing images. If a strict target threatens readability, request another transfer method. Always retain the unchanged original.
